The eighth is never an accident.

A badly cut tile at the edge. The one you hope no one notices. We do. That's where the name comes from — and it's the discipline we bring to every job, from a Didsbury splashback to a pool in Alderley Edge.

Born in Latvia, trained in the UK. Ten-plus years laying tile across kitchens, bathrooms and construction sites before launching Eighth Fragment to concentrate on the detail work no one else wants to touch.

Tilers Academy graduate. VAT registered. A quiet obsession with mitred edges and dead-level floors.

05 — Things we get asked

Answers before you ask.

A proper wet room uses a full-coverage tanking system — either a bonded sheet membrane or a liquid-applied compound — taken up the walls, across the whole floor, and sealed around every pipe and drain with reinforcing tape. We also build correct falls into the screed before tanking, not by cutting tiles on a wobble. Then we pressure-test the drain before a single tile goes down. If any of those steps get skipped, you've got a time-bomb behind the tiles.

Yes — both electric matting and wet systems. We coordinate with your electrician or plumber, prep the substrate with decoupling matting where needed, and crucially we test the system cold and hot before we cover it in tile. A fault found under a finished floor costs thousands to fix; a fault found before tiling costs an afternoon.

Three things most tilers get wrong: the substrate isn't rated for sustained 45-50°C humidity, the vapour barrier isn't continuous across junctions, and the grout isn't specified for repeated thermal cycling. Our specialist trained in Greece and Cyprus where steam rooms are everyday builds — he insists on heat-rated backer board, a sealed vapour layer behind it, and epoxy grout in the critical zones. It costs more. It lasts decades.

Yes — both new installs and rebuilds. Pool tiling demands chlorine- and chemical-resistant adhesives and grouts, a fully tanked shell, and careful detailing at returns, skimmers and waterline bands. Mosaic work is where most of the art lives. If you've got a leaking pool no one can diagnose, we can survey it; if you're building from scratch, we'll coordinate with your pool contractor from day one.

Tanking is a waterproof barrier applied behind your tiles. If you're tiling a shower cubicle, a wet room, a bath surround or anywhere water can sit or splash for sustained periods — yes, you need it. Tiles and grout are water-resistant, not waterproof. Without tanking, water eventually migrates through the grout joints, soaks into the substrate, and quietly destroys the wall behind. We'll advise honestly on where tanking is essential and where it's overkill.

Yes — we're VAT registered, which means every quote includes VAT transparently and you get a proper invoice for your records (useful for renovation and landlord claims). We'll visit to measure, check your substrate, ask what finish you're after, and typically come back with a fixed quote within 48 hours. No "estimates" that magically grow mid-job.
